Did you get your Surgery Video?

My surgeon sent me home with with a video of my surgery on DVD.  Did other people get that?  It’s really cool to hear his commentary while he was working on me, but some of the visuals are a little hard to stomach!

Did you get sent home with a video, or any other cool perk for that matter?

  1. I’m not sure I could watch a video, but I know I’ll be getting pictures from the surgery.

My doctor recommended I get a Game Ready cooling machine at my pre-op appointment yesterday, but it’s not clear if insurance will cover it. Did you have anything special for icing / RICE after surgery?

  2. That’s interesting that some docs offer pictures, i wonder if the pictures are from the arthroscope or from an external camera.

I didn’t get any kind of cooling machine, just a continuous motion machine. I’ve spoken to a couple of co-workers who did get the cooling device for their ACL surgeries, and they found them quite helpful.

  3. A video?! Wow. I did not even want to look at the pictures they took.

  4. I only got pics and they were from the arthroscope.

  5. I didn’t get a video - got to see pictures taken of the torn ACL plus a picture of the graft as well as the screws that are holding the ligament together.

  6. Just found your blog! VERY helpful! Had my ACl reconstructed (autograft) and meniscectomy on Monday May 11th. Just wanted to confirm I got sent home with a video as well. But I must admit I didn’t look at my 1st one 20 yrs ago and probably won’t look anytime soon now at this one. But I think it’s a cool thing to have!

  7. That was the last thing I asked for after I saw their giant LCD screen and right before the put me under–can I have a copy of the video? But no dice. They did give me a sheet with approx 20 small photos immediately when I woke up.

I definitely recommend the cooling machine and still use it to reduce inflammation and swelling after workouts five months after the surgery. In terms of empirical observations on its utility: I never had any major swelling and no bruising more than an inch in diameter. In terms of convenience, I only needed to refill mine with ice 2-3 times per day (I kept it active pretty much 24/7 the first couple weeks) and the enclosed system is much less messy than bags of actual melting ice. And much safer than frozen gel packs.
